Wright takes down Slater to win title
Australia's Owen Wright took down Kelly Slater in the final to win the inaugural Quiksilver Pro New York at Long Beach.
The 21-year-old gained revenge after having lost out to the 10-times reigning world champion in the final of the previous stop on the ASP World Tour in Teahupo’o.
Wright notched scores of 7.00, 9.23, and 8.00 early on and Slater was never able to recover.
“I’m just lapping it up right now,” Wright said. “I’ve always wanted to be in a final with Kelly (Slater) and last week at Teahupo’o was great. I think Kelly is ready for payback already."
Victory for Wright takes him to second spot in the overall rankings, and within striking distance of his first world title.
Slater, who beat Josh Kerr and Taj Burrow on the final day of action in New York to reach the final, was full of praise for Wright.
"I'm stoked for Owen to get his first win, congratulations," he said.
