Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde has failed in his final attempt to overturn a worldwide doping ban that was imposed following Operation Puerto.

The Swiss supreme court rejected Valverde's appeal against a Court of Arbitration for Sport decision to enforce the two-year ban, ruling it "unfounded".

The 2009 Vuelta a Espana winner was banned from racing in Italy in May 2009 partly on the basis of evidence which came to light during the Spanish Operation Puerto doping investigation.

Valverde had already lost one final appeal on the Italian sanction in November.

He will now remain suspended until the end of December 2011, and may even face tougher sanctions after the recommendations of the court.

"From the Federal Tribunal's point of view... there is nothing to stand in the way of expanding sanctions against the Spanish cyclist to the whole world," the Swiss supreme court said.
