The 25-year-old Frenchman beat Vacansoleil's Romain Feillu into second place in the deciding field sprint, and Jean-Lou Paiani of French National Espoirs Team into third.

Feillu, who receives a six-second time bonus for his second-placed finish, will wear the leader's jersey as the Tour continues on Thursday, pushing Prologue winner Haimer Zubeldia down to second place in the general classification.

"The riders are doing well and we will defend the jersey tomorrow," said Hilaire Van Der Schueren, Vacansoleil team manager. "The stages on Friday and Saturday are difficult."

Thursday will see the peloton take on a 138.8km stage from Le Parc Des Oiseaux to Trevoux.
