Philippe Gilbert has been strongly linked to a move to BMC, according to reports in the Belgian press.

The Belgian's manager Vincent Wathelet has been quoted as saying that the 29-year-old's options for 2012 are either to move to the American outfit or to stay with his Omega Pharma-Lotto team, who are merging with the Quick Step team from next year.

"It's come down to Quick Step and BMC," said Wathelet in a report by Het Laatste Nieuws.

Gilbert's stock has risen after a superb season. He completed a treble of Ardennes Classic victories in the spring, wore the yellow jersey for a day at the Tour de France, and continued his dominance in one-day classics with a recent victory at the Clasica San Sebastian.

"On Tuesday we held discussions with (Quick Step manager) Patrick Lefevere and next week we will speak to (BMC manager) John Lelangue," Wathelet added.

"But if it's coming down to sporting criteria, it's clear: BMC are ahead of the pack.

"Sporting criteria are very important for Philippe and the Tour de France has reassured him."

BMC have Tour de France winner Cadel Evans amongst their line-up, and have already added Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd, a friend of Gilbert's, to their ranks for next season.
