Manchester City’s hopes for silverware this season have been dealt a massive blow with captain and top scorer Carlos Tevez set to be ruled out of the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United.

Tevez limped out of the 3-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool after picking up a hamstring injury in the build-up to Andy Carroll’s opening goal.

And in the post-match interview boss Roberto Mancini all but ruled the Argentina striker out of the derby clash at Wembley on April 16.

"Tevez’s hamstring is hurt, and it will be very difficult for next Saturday," Mancini said.

"But afterwards I hope he will be fine. We’ll need another two weeks."

A similar injury has ruled England defender Micah Richards out of the match.

Tevez has scored 22 goals in all competitions this season, more than twice as many as the club’s second top-scorer Mario Balotelli.

Flamboyant but petulant Italy forward Balotelli - whose talent has been seen infrequently due to a frustrating combination of injury and suspension - is now set to start in a high-intensity atmosphere, in which he has a reputation for behaving rashly.

Fellow striker Edin Dzeko has struggled to adapt since joining from Wolfsburg in January and drew another blank against Liverpool, meaning he has only scored four times with all his goals coming in cup competitions.
