Leipheimer takes control in Utah
Tejay Van Garderen stormed round the Miller Motorsports Park to win the individual time trial on stage three of the Tour of Utah as Levi Leipheimer claimed the overall lead of the race.
HTC-Highroad's Van Garderen eclipsed the rest of the field on the twisting 15.6km route with a time of 17mins 33.64secs, victory coming on the American's 23rd birthday.
Radioshack's Leipheimer, the defending champion, clocked the second fastest time of the day - 17mins 39.58secs - to usurp overnight leader Sergio Henao at the top of the GC.
Van Garderen's team-mate Patrick Gretsch completed the top three.
"Gretsch came out as the twenty fifth to go with 17:43 which was very impressive," HTC's sport director Allan Peiper said. "He held that lead near to the end without much contest.
"Tejay hit the first split with the fastest time and we knew he was in the zone, he and Patrick are both in great form.
"It was great to see Tejay take the win especially ahead of a talent like Leipheimer, and to have two men on the podium was even better."
With Henao losing a huge amount of time and dropping to fourth on the GC, Janez Brajkovic of Radioshack took second ahead of Henao's Gobernacion de Antioquia team-mate Oscar Sevilla sitting in third. Kelly Benefit Strategies' Jesse Anthony retained fifth.
