Aston Villa striker John Carew was conned out of £250,000 by an allegedly crooked car dealer, a court has heard.

Prosecutor Simon Davis told Birmingham Crown Court that car dealer Richard Esprit had conned the Norwegian star over promises that he would deliver two Porsches boasting, "all the specifications Jeremy Clarkson would dream about."

The prosecutor explained how Carew handed over £110,000 for a Porsche Cayenne Gemballa that he never received, and also paid £92,500 for a 198-mile-an-hour Porsche 997, only to later find out that the car had already been registered in someone else's name.

Davis added that the Villa player returned the car, but was given a cheque which bounced - as did a cheque for £46,000 given him by Espirit for selling his BMW M3.

The prosecutor added that Esprit had befriended Carew in Monaco in 2006 while he was playing for Lyon, and used his relationship with him.

"This defendant effectively befriended John Carew, and gained his trust so that he accepted what he was saying," said Davis.
