Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's leading scorer, has been suspended for two games for a "reckless hit" on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell, the league said.

Ovechkin was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct on the play, which occurred during the first period of the Capitals' 4-3 overtime win on Sunday in Chicago.

Campbell suffered a broken collarbone after being pushed from behind into the boards. He is expected to be sidelined at least through the end of the regular season.

Ovechkin, who was suspended for two games in November for a knee-to-knee hit on Carolina's Tim Gleason, will forfeit nearly 155,000 in salary, the league said in a release.

"We have no problem with the way Alex tried to finish his check," Capitals general manager George McPhee said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, an injury resulted. We are disappointed with the suspension but do not want to comment further."

Ovechkin, the reigning league MVP, will miss Washington's games at Florida on Tuesday and at Carolina on Thursday.
