Colnago's Filippo Savini won the third stage of the Castilla y Leon, after a late puncture derailed Alberto Contador's hopes of defending his title in Spain.

Savini finished the 157.2-kilometre stage in three hours, 58 minutes and 25 seconds to edge Dutchman Bauke Mollema (Rabobank) into second place by seven seconds, with Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago) finishing narrowly third by the same margin.

Three-times champion of the Castilla y Leon, Contador (Saxo Bank) had already suffered one puncture on the mountain stage when disaster struck with two kilometres remaining.

The Spaniard finished three minutes behind Savini, while Mollema's second-placed finish was enough to propel him into the overall lead with two stages remaining of the five-day tour.
