* Austrian likely to miss rest of season
* Surgery required for cartilage injury
Benjamin Raich, Austria's most successful active alpine skier, will miss the remainder of the world championships after tearing knee ligaments in the team event on Wedneaday.
The three times world champion also damaged cartilage in his shin, an injury which requires surgery, when he crashed in a parallel slalom against Croatia.
Raich, 32, who was taken to hospital in Innsbruck, will take no further part in the championships and will probably miss the rest of the season.
The Austrian won the slalom and combined gold medals in Bormio in 2005 and the team event in Are in 2007. He also won two gold medals at the 2006 Turin Olympics.
Raich, winner of the overall World Cup in 2006, was scheduled to take part in the giant slalom and slalom in Garmisch.
