Houston warning over Rangers response

Dundee United boss Peter Houston has warned Rangers may be looking for revenge for February's Scottish Cup exit when the teams meet in Saturday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League fixture.

The Tangerines outclassed the lacklustre Light Blues 2-0 thanks to goals from Gavin Gunning and Johnny Russell to set up a quarter-final tie with holders Celtic which they lost last weekend.

Now Ally McCoist's men are preparing for a rematch in the televised Tannadice fixture and Houston said: "Rangers might well think back to the Scottish Cup game last month which we won. They didn't play on the day. That's one of the main reasons we beat them."

He added: "By contrast, we were right on our game and they weren't as good as they normally are against us at Ibrox. That was just before all the nonsense came out about administration and since then it's been tough on them.

"But we've got to make sure that the whole thing isn't reversed on Saturday and that we keep those high sort of standards. We can't afford to fall below them at all because if we do Rangers have far too many quality players who could take advantage of it."

Rangers head for Tayside for the live lunchtime showdown with their financial future still hanging in the balance as they fight to stay afloat.

However, Houston is full of praise for the manner in which McCoist and co have coped with the effects of administration and knows running out in front of the live cameras at Tannadice will come as a huge relief to the players.

He said: "I've got great admiration for the guys at Rangers like McCoist and the players. I don't think people realise just exactly what has gone on and how tough it has been.

"We'll never know but to their credit they've done brilliantly throughout it all recently. They must take great credit for the way they've handled things.

"Probably the hardest thing is to just sit down and concentrate on their football but that is their release in many ways. They're still packed full of good international players who're very capable on their day."
