Key moments in the 2009/10 La Liga season:

Oct 10 2009 - Real Madrid's record signing Cristiano Ronaldo aggravates an ankle injury playing for Portugal against Hungary. The $130 million forward will not return until a few days before the season's first "Clasico" against Barcelona at the Nou Camp at the end of November.


Nov 29 2009 - Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic comes off the bench and nets a 55th-minute volley to fire Barca to a 1-0 victory over visiting Real. Victor Valdes earlier pulls off a superb save to deny Ronaldo when he seemed certain to score.


April 10 2010 - In the second "Clasico" of the campaign, dubbed "the game of the century" in the Spanish media, Barca win 2-0 and climb back to the top of the standings. Lionel Messi and Pedro score either side of halftime and Barca secure the head-to-head advantage over their arch rivals.


May 1 2010 - Barca recover from their Champions League elimination at the hands of Inter Milan and claim a thumping 4-1 success at Villarreal, Messi opening and finishing the scoring with goals in between from Xavi and Bojan Krkic.


May 8 2010 - Goals from Messi, Bojan Krkic and Pedro put Barca 3-0 up at fourth-placed Sevilla. Two quick second-half goals set nerves jangling but they hold on for a crucial three points as Real crush visiting Athletic Bilbao 5-1.


May 16 2010 - Barcelona clinched a second consecutive title on the final day of the season by thrashing Real Valladolid 4-0 at home. Messi netted twice to finish as the league's top scorer with 34. Barca with 99 points from 38 matches, three ahead of second-placed Real.
