Petkovic progresses in Cincy

Andrea Petkovic booked her place in the second round of the Cincinnati Open with a come-from-behind 5-7 7-6(5) 6-2 victory over Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova.

After dropping the first set, the ninth-seeded German was forced to dig deep but having secured a tense tie-break in the second she went on to claim the decider with ease.

Petkovic will now meet Sofia Arvidsson after the Swede staged an even more impressive recovery, having lost the first set to love, to beat Romania's Monica Niculescu 0-6 7-6(4) 6-3.

Ana Ivanovic, seeded 15, had no trouble in seeing off American qualifier Alexa Glatch 6-0 6-2 while 14th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova registered a routine 6-3 6-4 win over Jill Craybas of the US. The Russian will now play Czech Petra Cetkovska after she beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 2-6 6-2 6-2.

Australian Anastasia Rodionova booked a date with Maria Sharapova in the second round after destroying Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-0 6-0 while China's Zheng Jie saw off German Julia Goerges 6-2 1-6 6-4.

Lucie Safarova beat Klara Zakopalova 6-2 6-2 in an all-Czech encounter to earn the right to play Li Na while Russia's Ekaterina Makarova will meet compatriot and second seed Vera Zvonareva after beating Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 7-5 6-3.

Italian Sara Errani ended American Sloane Stephens's tournament with a 6-1 7-5 win, and there were also victories for Petra Martic of Croatia, Chanelle Scheeper of South Africa, Israel's Shahar Peer and Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine.
