Wales lock Alun Wyn Jones is due to have elbow surgery on Wednesday that will rule him out of the rest of the Six Nations, the Welsh Rugby Union have announced.

Jones, who suffered the injury late in the first half of the 31-24 victory over Scotland in Cardiff on Saturday, will be out for between six and 12 weeks.

The forward was treated at halftime at the Millennium Stadium and finished the match, but was later discovered to have chipped a bone and suffered ligament damage.

"Alun Wyn experienced some swelling to the joint the day after the game and was sent for a scan," Wales physio Mark Davies was quoted as saying in a WRU statement.

"...after receiving those results and after further consultation with surgeons today, it has been concluded that the chipped bone needs to be removed and the ligament to be repaired in order to ensure a stable joint," he added.

Jones will not be replaced in the Wales squad.

He had kept his place in the team to play Scotland despite being heavily criticised by coach Warren Gatland after he was sin-binned for tripping in the opening defeat by England.

Wales face France at the Millennium Stadium on February 26.
