Russian driver Mikhail Aleshin got off to a perfect start to the season as he won the first race of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series at Motorland Aragon.
The Carlin driver won ahead of Pons Racing's Daniel Zampieri and Tech 1 Racing's Daniel Ricciardo in a chaotic wet race that saw just nine finishers.
Australian Ricciardo had edged Aleshin for pole position, but the Russian got a better start and made it to the first corner in the lead.
Aleshin then pulled away from the field, with Ricciardo pushing hard to get back and making an error which saw him cede second position to Zampieri.
"I got off to a very good start and that meant I benefitted from better visibility that the others," Aleshin said.
"The track was really very dicey. It was practically impossible to keep the car on the track for the last ten laps."
Ricciardo was philosophical after slipping from pole to third place: "I thought I'd started well, but Mikhail's start was better. From then on, visibility behind him was practically zero. So I'm happy with this result."
In the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 class Estonia's Kevin Korjus won the opening race of the season at Motorland Aragon.
Korjus mastered the wet track to move quickly into third place the field after starting from the third row of the grid, sitting for much of the race behind pole sitter Andre Negrao and Arthur Pic.
But when Pic tried to go past Negrao on lap seven he only succeeded in putting both cars off the track, leaving Korjus to take victory ahead of Daniel de Jong and Luciano Bacheta. For Bacheta the result was particularly impressive as he started back in 12th on the grid.
"I honestly didn't expect a victory in my first race," said Korjus. "I got away to a good start, and I had a little bit of good fortune during the race. But I didn't make any mistakes and everything was very positive. It's perfect."
