MacLean, 45, succeeds Jacques Lemaire, who retired after one season in his second stint as the team's coach, the Devils said.

MacLean played for the Devils for 14 seasons. He coached the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Lowell, Massachusetts, last season, guiding them to a franchise-best 39-31-4-6 record.

Previously he served as an assistant coach with New Jersey for seven seasons.

The Devils' all-time goals leader with 347, MacLean was a member of New Jersey's first Stanley Cup title team in 1995.
