The Argentine Saxo Bank-SunGard rider beat Italian Giacomo Nizzolo (Leopard Trek) to the line, with Frenchman Anthony Roux (FDJ) finishing third on the 202km stage.

"The stage developed perfectly for us and I'm truly proud to be able to round it off by winning the stage on this very tough course," said Haedo.

"I couldn't have done it without Michael [Morkov] and Jonas [Aaen] helping in the finale. They were there for me all the way and delivered me in a perfect position for the sprint and a stage win for the team.

"Tomorrow (Saturday) there's another tiring day as we're entering the course of Liege-Bastogne-Liege where I believe that both Michael and Jonas will be strong enough to do a good result if everything goes their way."

Cederic Pineau (FDJ), Steven Van Vooren (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator), Michael Vanderaerden (Donckers Koffie-Jelly Belly) and Cornelius van Ooijen (Team Jo Piels) broke away early on and built a lead of 10 minutes.

They were reeled in by the peloton with 70km remaining - Pineau took the climb bonus points - before 15 riders escaped on the Cauberg climb with 42km left to race.

That did not last and a further breakaway of 12 riders tried their luck 12km from the finish. Team Sky and Garmin-Cervelo led the peloton back up to them only for Saxo Bank-SunGard to take control with 1km to go.

Omega Pharma-Lotto rider Phillipe Gilbert was at the heart of every escape and tried again one last time, only for Haedo to come through and claim the victory

Prologue winner Patrick Gretsch (HTC-Highroad) retains his race lead after coming home in the peloton. He is four seconds ahead of stage two winner Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) with two stages remaining.
