Serie A - Cagliari beat Novara to go top
Cagliari beat promoted Novara 2-1 at the Stadio Sant Elia to go top of Serie A for one night at least.
Japanese forward Takayuki Morimoto hit a consolation goal in the last minute but the hosts had all-but closed out their second win in two matches in the strike-affected Italian top flight.
The hosts did all the running in the first half, with visiting keeper Samir Ujkani making several saves.
His team had a goal disallowed just before the break, Ribeiro offside when he touched on Radja Nainggolan's long-range shot, while they withstood some mild pressure from Novara early in the second half.
They regained control though and almost scored a second when Nene fired straight at Ujkani from close range.
The second eventually came near the end, and it was fortuitous enough with Larrivey unaware as he diverted Daniele Conti’s shot in.
Novara’s consolation was equally flukey - Morimoto's shot took a huge deflection off Davide Astori before flying in - and despite a frantic attempt by the visitors to equalise, Cagliari were able to hold on to victory.
Cagliari have six points from two matches and, whatever happens on Sunday, are likely to remain in the top four, while Novara are mid-table for now but expected to slide down by the end of the week’s play.
