Darren Cheesman and Richard Smith both scored on their debuts as Great Britain were held to a 2-2 draw by Argentina at Lilleshall.

Ignacio Bergner had put the visitors ahead on 13 minutes with a penalty corner and that was how things stood at the half-time interval.

But two goals in three minutes from East Grinstead's Cheesman and Loughborough Students' Smith put Great Britain ahead - only for a fortuitous goal from Lucas Rossi three minutes from time to level things up.

It was the first international run out for many of the side since their agonising fourth place finish at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi last month where consecutive defeats on penalty strokes saw England finish outside the medals.

And head coach Jason Lee again had one eye on the future, again selecting 18-year-old youngsters Andy Bull of Loughborough Students and Harry Martin of Old Loughtonians.

Great Britain team manager Andy Halliday said: "We were punished for a sloppy start but in difficult conditions we got ourselves into a winning position.

"It was disappointing that a lapse in concentration allowed Argentina back into the match at the end."

The sides meet again on Thursday morning in the second and final match of the series.
