Hosea Gear will be out of rugby for between four and six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn knee cartilage.
The 25-year-old Hurricanes winger suffered the injury to his left knee during last Friday night's Super 14 win against the Blues and went under the knife on Thursday morning.
"We're hoping he'll be right in about four weeks. He's got a cartilage tear," said Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper.
"We didn't know the circumstances until Wednesday, so he was rushed in to get that fixed up as quickly as possible.
"He's obviously disappointed. He had a great pre-season and his form went through into the Blues game."
