Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Serbia's Nemanja Vidic will captain the side for the rest of the season, starting against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ferguson announced earlier in the week that he was dropping the injury-prone Gary Neville as skipper and that Ryan Giggs was also not in contention as United needed someone who would play every week.

Rio Ferdinand, who is already in a battle to retain the England captaincy with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard after missing the World Cup, was a regular stand-in for Neville last season but also appears to have missed out on the role as he continues to battle injury.

Ferdinand captained United in their Champions League tie against Rangers in mid-week when Ferguson rested a host of his first-team players, including Vidic.

"As I explained last week, what we wanted was someone who was consistently available for us," Ferguson told the team's TV channel.

"Everyone recognises Nemanja Vidic would always be there. He has been fit all season and you don't leave him out of the team unless you are going to rest him.

"He started the campaign as captain and it will stay that way."

Vidic, who signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford in the summer, has started as captain in all four of the club's Premier League fixtures so far this season.

"It is a big achievement for me," the 28-year-old Serb said last month.

"No-one is going to say they don't want to be the captain of Manchester United and I am very happy with it.

"It is a major responsibility but I have always liked responsibility. I am not a player who shies away from it. Nothing has really changed in that respect.

"But we all know the captains of the team are Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. They are the real leaders. The other players follow how they do things."
