Sylvain Chavanel has back op
Quick Step rider Sylvain Chavanel has undergone a back operation which will delay his preparation for the 2012 season.
The team stated: "Sylvain Chavanel was operated [on] using a nucleotomy technique to remove a herniated disk at the L5 S1 level."
The operation, carried out in Bordeaux, was a success.
“It’s already been a while that I’ve been suffering with this problem, which bothered me both on my bike and in my daily life,” he said.
“The team medical staff and I first agreed to try some conservative therapies which didn’t solve the problem. At that point I needed the operation.
“Now I’ll have to observe a period of rest. The goal is to get back on a bike in a few weeks.”
The three-times Tour de France stage winner's team-mates are starting training for next season around now, which means he will be relatively behind schedule.
He is targeting success in both the Tour and Olympic Games in 2012.
