Giro del Trentino organisers are to seek damages from Cofidis after they allegedly pulled out of this week's event at the last minute but the French team denied they had ever entered the race.

"We are very disappointed by the behaviour of the French team and we intend to undertake every action allowed by the UCI (International Cycling Union) regulations to obtain a refund from all the supported costs," Giro den Trentino director Nerio Ioppi said on the race's website.

Cofidis manager Eric Boyer told Reuters his team had not broken any rules.

"It is just that we did not confirm (our entry) after getting an invitation from the organisers," he said.

"According to UCI regulations, you have to confirm your participation. In November or December, we (asked for) invitation requests (from) several organisers and only afterwards do we decide which races we take part in.

"Then we confirm - or not. But we absolutely did not withdraw from the Giro del Trentino. I am outraged. I have been in cycling for 25 years and I am not that kind of bad-mannered person."

With Cofidis not starting the Giro del Trentino, 18 teams will take part in the race that starts on Tuesday with a 13.4-km time-trial.

The Giro del Trentino is often used as a preparation for the Giro d'Italia.
