The Belgian Omega Pharme rider continued a remarkable run of success, edging out Niki Terpstra of the Netherlands by three seconds.

His roll of honour in 2011 now reads: Brabantse Pijl, Amstel Gold, Fleche-Wallone, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Ronde van Belgie and now the Ster ZLM Toer, which he also won in 2-0.

Gilbert leads the UCI individual standings ahead of Alberto Contador, and will return to his home in Monaco to prepare for the Tour de France.

Though the 28-year-old is not considered a serious contender for overall victory, he could be a major factor in the first week when several stages appear to suit his explosive style.

Australia's Leigh Howard (HTC) won the final stage of the Ster ZLM Toer from Etten to Leur, beating the Argentine Lucas Sebastian Haedo and the American Tyler Farrar in a sprint.
