David Ferrer overcame Canadian qualifier Pierre-Ludovic Duclos 6-4 6-4 to move into the second round of the UNICEF Open at Den Bosch, but Viktor Troicki suffered a surprise exit.

In the women’s draw, Kim Clijsters moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-1 win over Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine.

Spain’s Ferrer, champion at Den Bosch in 2008 and a semi-finalist at Roland Garros earlier this month, completed his win in just over 90 minutes.

The world number six will meet Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in the third round after he beat Russian Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-4 6-2.

Serbia’s Troicki, meanwhile, lost 7-6(4) 6-2 to Belgian grass-court specialist Xavier Malisse, while Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr lost 6-4 6-4 to Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Malisse faces Paolo Lorenzi after he beat Ivan Dodig 6-4 6-4, while Roger-Vasselin plays Flavio Cipolla after fellow Italian Potito Starace abandoned their match in the first set due to a back injury.

Poland’s eighth seed Lukasz Kubot set up a second-round tie with France’s Benoit Paire with a 6-1 6-2 win over Israel’s Dudi Sela.

Belgium’s former world number one Clijsters made lighter work of Bondarenko than in her first-round win over Romina Oprandi, which was her first victory after three months out with a hip problem.

Clijsters only faced one break point all match and she will face the winner of Francesca Schiavone’s match with Irina Begu.

Third seed Dominika Cibulkova beat Israeli Shahar Peer 6-2 7-6(5) to set up a third-round clash with Russia’s Nadia Petrova, the eighth seed moving through after beating Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5 6-3.

There was a surprise too as fourth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta went out with a whimper in a 6-1 6-1 loss to Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska.

Two first-round matches were played to completion on Tuesday as seventh seed Jelena Jankovic went out 6-2 3-6 6-4 to Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson, while Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer also suffered an upset in losing 6-1 6-2 to Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova.
