Gazzetta, which organises the event, said Friday's decision was taken by safety officials.

The ascent and descent, considered by some riders to be too dangerous, have been the cause of debate in the race for several days.

Stage 14's final ascent to Monte Zoncolan will stay in place. A new alternative route will be announced early on Saturday.

Belgium's Wouter Weylandt died in a crash on stage three on a tricky descent.

Two years ago, riders refused to race the streets of Milan during the Giro because of safety fears over parked cars.

This year's race finishes on May 29 in Milan. Spain's Alberto Contador is the overall leader.
