The top seed Serb will now face another Russian in the shape of Dmitry Tursunov, after the sixth seed got the better of France's Julien Benneteau 6-3 7-6 (1).

"I am very motivated to do well in these last few tournaments in order to try and finish in the Top 10 and maybe qualify for London," said Tipsarevic after the win.

"I was sick in the last two weeks and had not played a match for nine days. The first match at a tournament is always tough so I am happy I could finish very strong."

Earlier there was a big upset when Jeremy Chardy showed flashes of his old class in beating Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The Frenchman has slumped to 133 in the world but he beat the third-seeded Ukrainian 6-3 7-6 (6) to advance into the last eight.

Seventh seed Gilles Muller also crashed out as he was beaten 7-6(4) 6-3 by Philipp Kohlschreiber.
