The 35-year-old, who won 2002 Olympic silver and 2006 gold, produced the fastest time in both runs for a combined time of 1:55.06 minutes – taking gold ahead of compatriot Anja Schneiderheinze.

Schneiderheinze trailed by 0.49 seconds while the USA’s Shauna Rohbock completed the podium in third place, a further 0.11 off the pace.

Brazilian bobsleigher Fabiana Santos had a big crash, losing her helmet in the process - but despite the blow she was conscious afterwards and taken to hospital only as a precautionary measure.

It means Kiriasis now has 1286 points at the top of the World Cup standings while nearest rival Cathleen Martini, who could only manage fifth place in Winterberg, ensuring she is second on 1187.
