West Ham's co-owners have revealed they made an audacious attempt to sign Fernando Torres on loan from Chelsea in January.

Torres has not scored in over 21 hours of football stretching back to October and West Ham hoped to coax him to the Championship.

However, Chelsea dismissed the approach for the £50 million striker, who was required to stand in for Didier Drogba as the Ivory Coast international took part in the African Cup of Nations.

David Sullivan said to the West Ham Till I Die blog: "We tried to get Torres from Chelsea.

"Well if he couldn't score in the Premier League, come along with us for a month. We might fire him up! They just said 'not at this moment in time'."

Co-owner David Gold later confirmed on Twitter: "We tried to bring him in on a short-term loan."

Sullivan also confirmed that West Ham tried on three occasions to bring former hero Carlos Tevez back to the club on loan from Manchester City.
