The Premier League footballer who won a super injunction to stop details of his affair going public is suing social networking site Twitter.

Details of the married superstar's alleged affair with former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas have been splashed all across Twitter - as well as being published in several other countries - but given that the site is US-based it seemed he would have no legal recourse.

News has emerged that the player's lawyers began a High Court action earlier in the week to try to force the website to hand over details of users who have Tweeted his name. Those individuals could then potentially be hit with lawsuits, or possibly even face action for contempt of court.

The Sun newspaper reports that the player has already won a gagging order to stop Thomas discussing details of their affair.

Twitter are yet to comment on the case, but legal experts are highly sceptical about the chances of forcing an American company to pay heed to a British court ruling - particularly given the disarray and confusion surrounding UK privacy laws.
