The Croatian star has also been a transfer target for Chelsea for some time, but Spurs have so far rejected all offers for him.

The Mail on Sunday reports that United know that title contenders Tottenham will not allow one of their star players to leave at this stage of a crucial season for them, but they will throw the vast sum at the London club in the summer to try and find the midfield lynchpin they're sorely lacking.

Modric could double his current £60,000-a-week earnings at United without a ruckus, whereas the paper claims the Red Devils' other target Wesley Sneijder needs £250,000 a week to match his current salary at Internazionale - which could cause problems within the dressing room.

Manchester City have been linked with a move for the Wales star after rumours surfaced of a £50m escape clause in his contract.

However the Stellar Group, who represent Bale, have confirmed that no such clause exists - and with the record for any transfer being the £80m Real Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo, it is unlikely City or anyone else would cough up such a huge fee.

Carlos Tevez is still in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain about a transfer from the Manchester club, the Mail reports, but the paper quotes agent Kia Joorabchian saying that there is "still some way to go" before any deal is agreed.

The Mirror claims that he will not play in France and has his heart set on a move to one of the Milan clubs. City had refused to entertain the notion of a loan deal to Milan, but the paper reckons that stance has softened with nine days left in the transfer window: they could allow him to join until the end of the season if Milan agree to make the deal permanent in the summer.
