Roberts wants Royals spending

Jason Roberts acknowledges money must be spent to give Reading a real chance of Premier League survival but insists the nucleus of the squad needs to remain the same.

The veteran striker, who joined the Royals in January, was part of a spirited Reading side who proved their credentials this season, winning 23 of the final 31 games of the season to clinch the Championship title.

Roberts knows the bond and quality within the Royals squad and although recognising the need to strengthen, he insists it must be done in the right way heading into next term.

"Yes money has to be spent, yes players have to come in, but at the same time you have to keep the nucleus of the squad, the nucleus of the dressing room because this is a very special dressing room," he told club's official website.

"It is a dressing room with a great mentality. So long as we keep that and add the right players with the right mentality, I think we'll be in a good position to stay in the league next season."
