Liga - Pandiani grabs late win for Espanyol
Walter Pandiani's injury time goal sealed a much-needed 1-0 Liga win for Espanyol over Getafe at the Estadio Cornellá-El Prat.
Pandiani, who came on as a substitute with a quarter of an hour remaining, latched on to a rebound after Miguel Angel Moya could only parry Sergio Garcia's effort.
Until that point it had looked as if the hosts, who had dominated the contest, particularly in the second half, would be frustrated by some obdurate defence from the visitors.
Getafe had the better of the chances in the opening half an hour, though, with Javier Casquero particularly threatening.
The away side had a penalty shout waved away when Miku struck the ball against Didac Vila's hand, before Casquero went wide following up a free-kick, and then steering another shot over bar after getting on the end of Rios' cross.
But Espanyol responded, almost breaking the deadlock before the interval only for Moya to make a smart stop to deny Alvaro Vazquez.
In the second half it was one-way traffic as Espanyol pressed, but efforts from Garicia and Javi Marquez were deflected in the nick of time.
Joan Verdu's spectacular volley from distance drew another impressive stop from Moya, before Alberto Lopo came to his keeper's rescue by clearing Vladimir Weiss' shot off the line.
Espanyol were not to be denied, however, with Pandiani's strike securing a second victory of the season and lifting the team to 10th in the division.
Despite their fight, Getafe were unable to add to the single point they have amassed so far, and look like having a tough battle at the foot of the table.
