Disgraced Italian rider Riccardo Ricco lost his appeal against a two-month suspended jail term for doping during the 2008 Tour de France on Tuesday.

A court in Toulouse upheld the sentence and a 3,000-euro fine imposed by another French court in February.

Ricco was kicked off the 2008 Tour while in second place after failing a test for the blood-booster CERA.

He served a 20-month ban from cycling and was also tried and fined 5,710 euros by a court in Padua, Italy.

"We are disappointed by this decision because the French judges refused to enforce the European principle that the same person cannot be sentenced twice for the same offence by different courts," Ricco's lawyer, Annamaria Tripicchio-Rogier, said.

Ricco, who risked having his suspended jail term increased by going to appeal, was sacked by the Vacansoleil team last February after doctors said he had botched a blood transfusion on himself that nearly killed him.
