Winter Olympics - Murdoch too hot for Germany

Britain's men's curlers took a major step towards reaching the semi finals of the Winter Olympics with a crushing victory over Germany.

Britain's skip Murdoch and Smith - 0

Skip David Murdoch produced his best performance of the competition to date and was dominant from the word go, racing to an 8-2 lead after eight ends, prompting German skip Andy Kapp to thrown in the towel.

Murdoch and co will afford themselves a sigh of relief after such a commanding victory which moves them onto five wins and three losses from their eight matches.

Things did not look so rosy for Great Britain when a 7-6 defeat to Canada in their sixth match gave them a record of three wins and three losses and ensured there was work to do to reach the last four.

But a gritty victory over the USA on Sunday was followed up with an imperious display on Monday, meaning even if Great Britain lose to Norway in their final match, the worst they can do is reach the tie-break stage.

Victory for Murdoch against Thomas Ulsrud of Norway would guarantee their place in the last four as would a Sweden defeat to Denmark.

"It was a really solid performance and we are hitting the type of form that we expect from ourselves and we are glad to see that it is happening," said Murdoch.

"That is three really solid games now and the team usually does that by the time it gets to the end of the week at major championships and it is good to see.

"I think we are at least a tie-break spot but we aren't going to focus on that we, we will focus on getting another win tomorrow and that is for our semi-final berth.

"We put ourselves on the ropes but we have come out fighting, the Switzerland game cost us quite a lot but that is the situation we are in and we are dealing with it and playing well.

"I think there is still a little left to go, we certainly aren't maxed out, we are getting towards the type of form we want and I think the Canada game really got us into that type of mode and intensity and we have carried that forward.

"We totally dominated tonight and that is good. You don't want to peak at the start of the week, this is the business end of the week now and it is good to see everyone of us making some great shots."

While Murdoch was wayward in the closing stages against Canada's Kevin Martin, he was anything but against Kapp and raced into a 4-0 lead after four ends.

Britain's pressure on Germany was unrelenting and while Kapp pulled a single back, Murdoch chalked up another double to move into a commanding 6-1 lead.

Kapp again managed to pull one back but yet another double from Great Britain's on-song skip meant Germany were six points behind with two ends to go and promptly brought an early end to proceedings.
