Engine failure halts Ogier's title bid

Sebastien Ogier's remaining hopes of winning the 2011 World Rally title appear to be over after he retired with an engine problem in Spain.

Ogier had been running fifth on the event following two punctures earlier in the weekend, but was closing on fourth-placed Dani Sordo's Mini, running 13 seconds behind going into the penultimate stage, where his Citroen stopped.

The Frenchman is currently just three points behind joint series leaders Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen - although Citroen had indicated that it would give Loeb its backing for the championship still.

But with Loeb and Hirvonen running first and third at present - and Hirvonen set to be handed second by his Ford team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala - Ogier looks set to lose his remaining mathematical chance of the championship heading to next month's finale in Great Britain.
