Di Montezemolo: Vettel will drive a Ferrari
Vettel, who became the youngest F1 champion in the history of the sport this year, is contracted to Red Bull until 2011 and the Milton Keynes-based outfit also has an option on the German for 2012. However it would appear that the 23-year-old is very much on Ferrari's radar.
“Sebastian is fast, intelligent and young,” Montezemolo said. “He will drive a red car sooner or later.”
Indeed it is understood Ferrari is keen to pair Sebastian Vettel with Fernando Alonso in 2012, a potentially formidable line-up, although hardly likely to be the most harmonious.
Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz meanwhile admitted recently that the Milton Keynes-based outfit may struggle to keep Vettel in the long term.
"[If the car was not competitive], we would let him go even if he had a contract," Mateschitz said last month.
"Seb wants to drive for Ferrari some day. [But] we will make it as difficult a decision for him as possible."
