Oscar Freire edged a bunch finish in Antequera, posting the same time as the top 33 riders, including Irizar, Van der Broeck and Levi Leipheimer, who finished third overall.

Irizar’s Team RadioShack boasted four riders in the overall top 10, including Leipheimer, Ivan Rovnyi (eighth) and Haimar Zubeldia (10th).

"This is unbelievable," Irizar, 31, said afterwards. "I am so happy with this victory, but even more with the way my team-mates worked for me.

"Jani Brajkovic, Levi Leipheimer, Robbie Hunter, Haimar Zubeldia, Dmitriy Muravyev and Ivan Rovny, they all worked for me four long days. It is a huge pleasure to be part of this team.  It is hard to describe the feelings that I have now."

Irizar, a survivor of testicular cancer, now has seven top-level wins in his professional career.
