Newcastle United are reportedly investigating a training-ground fight that allegedly left defender Steven Taylor with a broken jaw.

The Daily Mail reported that the fight blew up over text messages sent to Taylor (pictured) by striker Andy Carroll's former girlfriend.

Taylor, 24, is understood to have been discharged from Newcastle General Hospital after undergoing treatment on an orthopaedic trauma ward.

The incident reportedly left both players needing surgery, with Carroll, 20, suffering a broken hand but going on to play and score the winning goal as Newcastle beat Doncaster 1-0 at the Keepmoat.

Championship leaders Newcastle, who went five points clear of West Brom after the win, have not commented on the allegations.

Owner Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are believed to have launched an internal investigation, with sources on Tyneside revealing they are furious that the focus has been taken off the club's promotion bid at a time when they were making headlines for the right reasons.

However, Northumbria Police have confirmed that the matter has not been reported to them.

Former England U21 captain Taylor had only recently returned to light training after a serious knee injury in January and is not expected to play again this season.

Carroll is currently on bail awaiting a Crown Court trial over an alleged assault in Newcastle city centre last year.

He will go to court in late April, accused of smashing a glass into the face of Michael Cook at the Blu Bambu club.
