Matt Mills hopes his npower Championship experience will be a valuable asset in the Bolton dressing room this season

Since leaving Manchester City in 2008, Mills has established himself as one of the second tier's leading centre-backs across spells with Doncaster, Reading and Leicester. However, last summer's big-money move to the Foxes' under Sven-Goran Eriksson turned sour after the former England boss was replaced by Nigel Pearson.

That paved the way for Mills to join Wanderers, and the 26-year-old said: "I've played in the league for a few years now and got close with the play-off final. I think any experience of different leagues can help. There will be a few boys in the dressing room who maybe haven't played in the Championship before."

Mills, who skippered Reading in their 2011 Wembley defeat to Swansea, added: "When you get to Christmas and you've racked up 30 games I'll be able to tell them how their legs will be feeling and how to go about it. But there's a lot of experience in the dressing room so I'm sure it'll be fine.

"Getting off to a good start is crucial. Basically, it's just consistency over the season. If you can pick that up early it will stand you in good stead because you are playing a lot of games."
