Karoliina Rantamaki scored two minutes into overtime to lift Finland to a 3-2 win over Sweden in the Olympic women's ice hockey bronze medal game.

Finland's hockey team celebrates their game winning goal in overtime against Sweden scored by Karoliina Rantamaki in their women's ice hockey bronze medal game at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics - 0

Rantamaki gave the Finns their second women's hockey bronze when her centring pass ricocheted off a skate in a crowd in front of the Swedish net past Sara Grahn.

The goal decided an ill-tempered contest between the Nordic rivals which feature plenty of shoving and one punch-up, Sweden's Katarina Timglas connecting with a vicious right to the chin of Finnish netminder Noora Raty that resulted in penalties to both players.

Heidi Pelttari and Michelle Karvinen also scored for the Finns while Maria Rooth and Danijela Rundqvist answered for Sweden.

After taking gold and silver at the Turin Winter Games, Swedish hockey players will return home without any medals.

The Swedish men's defence of their Olympic title ended on Wednesday with a shock quarter-final loss to Slovakia.

Earlier in the day, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge fired a warning shot across the sport's bows, acknowledging that the huge gap in skill between the two North American powerhouses and the rest of the world needed to be addressed.

The warning came just hours before unbeaten Canada and the United States were due to face off for the gold medal.

Canada blasted their way to the final by outscoring opponents 46-2 while the Americans outclassed their opposition 40-2.

It will be the third time in the four Olympics since women's hockey became part of the Winter Games that Canada and the US will meet for the gold.
