Midfield star Luka Modric is to delay signing a new contract at Tottenham until he knows who the manager is next season, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Current boss Harry Redknapp is hotly tipped to take the England job in the summer.

And the Croatia playmaker is not willing to discuss a new £140,000-a-week deal until he knows whether 'Arry is to remain at White Hart Lane - or if an acceptable successor is to be appointed.

Modric tried to force a £40 million move to Chelsea last summer, only for Spurs to dig their heels in - and chairman Daniel Levy now wants to tie him down to a new six-year deal despite securing the player's services until 2016 in 2010.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have opened negotiations to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, according to the Sun on Sunday.

The Uruguay star, who is also wanted by Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid, scored in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie between the sides.

Spurs are the latest club to be linked with Newcastle striker Demba Ba, with Chelsea earlier said to be considering a swoop. The Senegalese, who signed from West Ham on a free last summer, has a £7m escape clause in his contract. (Sunday Express)

Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov has rejected moves to Sunderland and Fulham, as he craves Champions League football. (Express)

Liverpool are considering a move for Anderlecht striker Matias Suarez, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season (Mirror).

West Brom and another unnamed Premier League club are also in for him, but his pricetag may put the Baggies off after Anderlecht coach Herman van Holsbeeck said: “There are 15 top clubs prepared to pay the money we want for Suarez and the fee could be higher than the money we received from Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku (£18m) last year.

"Matias could have gone to Russia in the winter and also Juventus, but his wife Magali did not want to go. Do I think Suarez is worth more than Lukaku? Well, technically he is a better player."

Newcastle are looking at PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, valued at £8-10m, in case midfield stars Cheikh Tiote and Yohan Cabaye are snapped up. (Star)

Tiote has been linked with a big-money move to Chelsea while there is plenty of interest from top Premier League clubs in Cabaye. The Toon are also looking at PSV left-back Erik Pieters.

Roy Hodgson has revealed he would take the England manager's job if it was offered to him by the Football Association.
