Matthews crowned in Cologne
Rabobank’s Michael Matthews sprinted to victory in the 95th edition of the Rund um Koln in Germany.
The 20-year-old Australian completed the 203.5km race in four hours, 50 minutes and 50 seconds, winning his third race of the season after stage triumphs in the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic and Vuelta a Murcia.
German veteran Jens Voigt initiated the opening break of the day, after just nine kilometres.
The five-strong group powered to a lead of up to six minutes, before finally falling back into the peloton 52km from the finish.
Matthew – in his debut season at Rabobank – out-sprinted German Marcel Kittel to cross the line first in Cologne, with Italian Giacomo Nizzolo completing the podium.
