Ailing Seve Ballesteros has been forced to call off his appearance at St Andrews for the 150th anniversary of the Open Championship after doctors advised him against making the trip.

The Spanish five-times Major winner was one of 32 former champions invited to play four holes at St Andrews on July 14, the day before The Open.

Ballesteros, 53, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after collapsing in Madrid in late 2008 and needed four operations before beginning a course of chemotherapy.

"I very much wanted to be at the Open in St Andrews next month to personally thank all the golf fans and friends who have given me their support," he said in a statement on his website.

"I am aware that there might be people who have been preparing their trip to encourage and cheer me up," he added.

"Hence I do not want to disappoint anyone at the last minute and after listening to the doctors' advice I have taken the difficult decision not to travel to St Andrews."

Ballesteros was resting and continuing his recovery at his home in Pedrena, northern Spain, the statement said.
