Olympique Marseille geared up for their midweek Champions League clash at Chelsea with a 2-1 home win over Sochaux on Saturday.
A superb Taye Taiwo goal and a clinical finish by Lucho Gonzalez was enough for the Ligue 1 champions although Nicolas Maurice-Belay reduced the arrears for Sochaux 15 minutes from time.
Marseille, who travel to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, moved up to fifth. They are four points adrift of leaders Stade Rennes, who won 2-1 at Nice.
Danijel Ljuboja cancelled out Stephane Dalmat's early opener for Rennes but Colombian striker Victor Montano netted the winner with 13 minutes left after a blunder by the Nice defence.
Later on Saturday second-placed St Etienne travel to Olympique Lyon who are struggling in 18th place.
Marseille, with Souleymane Diawara back from injury in central defence, were quickly rewarded for their efforts at a windswept Stade Velodrome when Taiwo's cross-cum-shot from 30 metres went into the top right corner after 19 minutes.
"I did it on purpose. I saw the keeper was off his line," Nigeria defender Taiwo told the Foot Plus TV channel.
Lucho made it 2-0 just after the hour when he coolly slotted home after a long throw by defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
Maurice-Belay scored a consolation goal in the 75th minute for Sochaux.
Promoted Arles-Avignon slumped to their seventh defeat in as many games when they lost 3-1 at 10-man Montpellier.
