Clermont tried to fight back into the match, with Morgan Parra scoring a try eight minutes from time to give the visitors hope before securing the consolation prize of a losing bonus point with a penalty two minutes from time.

Toulouse also struggled against lesser opposition, drawing 9-9 at Brive as the hosts' produced a stirring second-half comeback.

Lionel Beauxis had put the visitors 9-0 up just after half-time with his third penalty of the match, but Julien Caminati landed three penalties for the hosts - the last of them coming three minutes from time - to secure a share of the points.

Castres and Toulon also drew in a match that finished 22-22 at Stade Pierre-Antoine.

Jonny Wilkinson appeared to have secured a win with a penalty for Toulon two minutes from the final whistle, but Pierre Bernard landed a penalty for the hosts with the clock in the red to earn a draw with the last kick of the match.

In Saturday's late match, Agen fly-half Conrad Barnard came out on top of what turned into a battle of the kickers against his Bordeaux opposite number Gerard Frazer as the home side won 24-15.

Barnard landed seven penalties and a drop goal in a flawless kicking display while Frazer managed four penalties and one drop goal with just one miss.
