Juan Antonio Flecha notched the first semi-Classic of the season as he won the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium.

Sky team rider Juan Antonio Flecha of Spain celebrates as he wins the 65th Omloop Het Nieuwsblad cycling race in Ghent - 0

The Team Sky rider became the first Spaniard to ever win the race as he broke free from a six-man escape group - which included former winners Nick Nuyens (Rabobank) and Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) - in the Lange Munt cobbled sector with about 20kms to go.

The rest of the riders were swallowed up by the peleton but Flecha hung on to win the race by 17 seconds.

A late break from German Heinrich Haussler (Cervelo) saw him take second place just ahead of the American Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions).

After the race Flecha dedicated his win to Frank Vandenbroucke, the Belgian Classics star, who died last year.

The classics action continues in Belgium on Sunday with the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
