Aston Villa have announced that Darren Bent is unlikely to feature again this season after rupturing ankle ligaments in his left foot.

Bent went off on a stretcher during the 0-0 draw with Wigan at the weekend and Villa expect him to be absent for around 12 weeks.

Though Villa are as yet undecided over whether the striker will require surgery, they fear they will be without their top scorer for the remainder of the Premier League season.

The news makes it unlikely that Bent, 28, will be available for England when they travel to Poland and Ukraine for the Euro 2012 finals in June.

With Wayne Rooney suspended for the opening two games of the tournament, Bent was set to play a key role for his country.

He was desperate to play in a major tournament for the first time after being overlooked for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup squads.

A club statement read: "Darren Bent has undergone scans and he has seen a top ankle specialist this afternoon (Monday) in London.

"He faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines having ruptured ankle ligaments in his left foot in the game against Wigan and he is unlikely to play again this season.

"Dr Ian McGuinness and the Villa medical staff have been liaising with the England medical team about the extent of his injury.

"Darren will undergo a further examination in seven days to determine the need for an operation."

Bent has scored nine goals in 22 Premier League games this season for Villa and prior to his injury had been included in the England squad to face Netherlands on Wednesday.
