McCorkell shines in prelims
Jenna McCorkell laid down a marker that this year’s ISU World Figure Skating Championships could be her best yet as she topped the standings of the ladies’ preliminary round.
The 25-year-old claimed a ninth British ladies title back in November however two months later she couldn’t record a best-ever finish at the European Championships as she ended 18th.
Indeed it was the lowest she has finished at the continental competition but if her performance in the preliminary free skate in Nice is anything to go by there is definitely no hangover from it.
McCorkell, who was 24th at the worlds in 2011, a year after a career-best 14th, produced the best score of the 33 skaters of the preliminary round – the judges awarding her a season’s best 95.63.
Elena Glebova was placed second with 92.52 while Sonia Lafuente was third best with 91.84 with the top 12, led by McCorkell, now joining the 18 other entrants in the competition proper.
