The Russian free agent had 20 or more goals in five of his seven seasons with the Kings, including 30-goal seasons in 2007 and 2009. The Moscow native, a first-round draft pick by Los Angeles in 2000, has 168 career goals and 213 assists.

"Alex is a highly skilled player who we feel will play a key role in improving our offense and play in all situations," Rangers General Manager Glen Sather said.

Terms of his contract were not announced but local media reported Frolov, 28, signed a one-year deal worth $3 million.

The Rangers were 20th in league scoring last season with 222 goals, just 18 more than the league's lowest-scoring team.
